More about this artwork

"Figuras" (1928) by Joaquín Torres-García is a compelling piece that captures the essence of early 20th-century Avant-garde art with its unique blend of structural simplicity and emotional depth. This painting depicts a man and a woman standing side by side, rendered in a style that combines elements of cubism with an almost primitive form of expressionism. The man, dressed in a dark brown suit and lighter trousers, stands slightly turned towards the woman, giving him a posture that suggests a casual yet engaged demeanor. His facial features are simplified yet expressive, with marked eyebrows and eyes that seem to convey a contemplative mood. The woman, wearing a bright orange blouse and a green skirt, stands upright with her hands gently placed in front of her. Her face is characterized by bold, stark features including large eyes and a defined lip, which imbues her with a strong, almost statuesque presence.Behind these figures is a dark, textured background and a small, framed picture hanging on the wall, adding a layer of depth and context to the scene. The color palette is subdued, relying on earth tones that evoke a sense of groundedness and simplicity.Overall, "Figuras" exemplifies Torres-García's mastery in portraying human figures in a way that goes beyond mere representation, exploring the psychological and spiritual dimensions of his subjects.
