More about this artwork

Auguste Rodin, primarily known for his sculpture, also explored the realms of drawing and painting, capturing the human form with a sculptor's eye for depth and emotion. "The Reflection" is a compelling example of his work in this medium, seemingly a bridge between traditional drawing and the modernist movements that would follow. This painting shows us a figure, rendered in soft, warm tones that highlight the fluidity and grace of the human body. The subject, a woman with her torso bent forward and head inclined towards what appears to be a reflecting pool, is caught in a moment of introspection or perhaps fascination with her own image mirrored in the water. The choice of colors—muted yellows and subtle greens—along with the fluid, almost incomplete lines, contribute to a feeling of both impermanence and clarity.Rodin's expertise with the human anatomy is on full display here, with the figure's muscles and curves drawn with accuracy yet softened by the gentle coloring. The artwork invites viewers to consider themes of self-awareness and the metaphorical concept of reflection—both seeing oneself and being immersed in one's thoughts."The Reflection" not only showcases Rodin's versatility as an artist but also his deep understanding of human vulnerability and beauty.

Rodin was born into a poor family. After earning a living through sculpting decorative stoneworks, he entered art school. He then applied a craftsman-like approach to his work and modeled the human body with the naturalism that latterly became his unique style. Considered as the founder of modern sculpture, Rodin's original works clashed with predominant figurative sculpture from traditional themes of mythology and allegory since he celebrated individual human physicality.
