More about this artwork

Welcome to a vivid glimpse into 19th-century Austria through Thomas Ender's watercolor masterpiece, 'Mariazell.' Painted in 1840, this artwork captures the charming essence of the town known for its spiritual significance and breathtaking landscapes. The scene is set in the bustling streets of Mariazell, with its renowned Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary prominently in the center. This gothic-style church, with its twin spires and ornate façade, draws the eye as the focal point of the composition. It stands majestically amid the humbler town structures, symbolizing both the architectural and spiritual heights of the locale. The foreground of the painting is lively with townspeople engaged in daily activities, showcasing Ender’s meticulous attention to social details. Men and women in traditional attire can be seen conversing, walking, and partaking in commerce, which adds a dynamic human element to the serene architectural and natural setting. To the right, you can also observe a sign for an inn, "Gasthaus zur Goldenen Krone," hinting at the town's welcoming nature towards pilgrims and travelers. The backdrop features the lush, rolling hills typical of the Austrian countryside, enveloping the town in a peaceful embrace. Ender's use of watercolor enhances the softness of the verdant landscape, contrasting beautifully with the sharp architectural lines of the Basilica and surrounding buildings.Thomas Ender’s 'Mariazell' is not just a portrayal of a location; it is a window into the past, inviting viewers to experience the cultural and spiritual richness of Austria as it was in the early 19th century.

Thomas Ender was an Austrian landscape painter and watercolorist.

He was born to Johann Ender, a junk dealer, and was the twin brother of Johann Nepomuk Ender, a history painter. He and his brother were both enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where he began by studying history painting with Hubert Maurer, but switched to landscape painting with Laurenz Janscha then, after Janscha's death in 1812, with Joseph Mössmer. He was awarded the Academy's first prize for landscape drawing.
