More about this artwork

We are delighted to present "Judith met het hoofd van Holofernes" by Jurriaan Andriessen, a compelling artwork portraying the biblical heroine Judith. This piece, crafted between 1752 and 1819, captures a moment of dramatic triumph in a muted watercolor palette. The painting depicts Judith standing assertively with one hand on her hip and the other holding a sword, conveying her bravery and determination. Her expression, looking upwards, might reflect a moment of contemplation or divine inspiration, highlighting her role as a savior in the biblical narrative, where she decapitates the Assyrian general Holofernes to save her people.Judith is dressed in classical garments, reminiscent of the clothing style of ancient times, her attire draping elegantly around her figure. The subdued colors of her dress, mainly whites and soft blues, contrast with the darker, earthy tones of the background, helping her figure stand out as the focal point of the composition. The use of light and shadows, alongside the delicate yet expressive line work, enhances the emotional intensity of the scene. This artwork not only showcases Andriessen’s skill with watercolors but also reflects the powerful imagery often associated with historic and religious narratives."Judith met het hoofd van Holofernes" stands as a testament to the enduring allure of biblical stories in art and continues to inspire viewers with its depiction of courage and virtuous defiance.
