More about this artwork

Welcome to our virtual exhibit featuring the captivating work of the Catalan modernist painter Ramón Casas. One standout piece, created in 1897, is "Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu on a Tandem." This dynamic painting captures a delightful moment between two friends, or perhaps more fittingly, partners in adventure, engaged in the animated momentum of a tandem bicycle ride.In this masterpiece, both figures are portrayed with a striking verisimilitude that is characteristic of Casas' style. The foreground features Ramon Casas himself, realistically steering the bicycle with intense concentration and vitality. Behind him, Pere Romeu, both a friend and frequent collaborator, mounts the bike in a pose that suggests both participation and a playful struggle. He looks out towards the viewer, almost inviting them into this shared moment of motion and camaraderie.Dressed in white from head to toe, with cycling attire that includes breeches, long socks, and caps, the subjects are set against a muted, earth-toned background that subtly hints at a bustling urban setting. This lack of detailed context focuses the viewer's attention more acutely on the figures themselves and the striking black bicycle, accentuating the themes of friendship and shared experience."Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu on a Tandem" not only highlights the typical bohemian lifestyle embraced by many artists of that era but also serves as an emblem of modernity, reflecting the growing popularity of cycling in urban environments at the turn of the 20th century. This painting offers a glimpse into the intersection of personal connection and contemporary life, all through the evocative and skilled brush of Ramón Casas.

He was also known for his paintings of crowd scenes ranging from the audience at a bullfight to the assembly for an execution to rioters in the Barcelona streets (El garrot). Also a graphic designer, his posters and postcards helped to define the Catalan art movement known as modernisme.
