More about this artwork

Featured on our website today is an intriguing work tied closely to the literary world: the cover illustration for "The Bicyclers and Three Other Farces" by John Kendrick Bangs, illustrated by Peter Newell and published in 1896.The artwork captures the essence of a late 19th-century American setting, using a subdued palette and simple lines that adeptly convey the humor and light-heartedness expected of Bangs' farces. It features a depiction of two figures, a stern-looking policeman in uniform and a stylishly dressed lady, who seems to be engaged in an urgent phone conversation. The officer's firm expression contrasts effectively with the lady's concerned yet distracted demeanor, symbolizing perhaps a moment of comic misunderstanding or an amusing interaction typical of Bangs’ narrative style.Peter Newell's illustration not only invites readers into the quirky, whimsical world of Bangs but also reflects the period's illustration style, which often combined realism with expressive caricature. The cover art is a fitting portal into the stories, hinting at the comedic and farcical situations that lie within.
