More about this artwork

Peter Newell's 1912 illustration, titled "The Rocket Book Pl 01," captures a moment of delightful surprise and wonder. This captivating artwork is set in what appears to be a basement or utility room, where something out of the ordinary has just occurred.Centered in the composition is a young boy, dressed in a horizontally striped t-shirt and a cap, whose wide-eyed expression reflects both astonishment and curiosity. The focal point of the scene is a rocket or cylindrical object that has seemingly blasted through the floor, creating a dynamic eruption of debris and energy. The rocket emits a powerful, fiery beam downward, suggesting its forceful entrance from the floor above.Contrasting the warm, fiery tones of the rocket's trail, the room is rendered in subdued browns and grays, which highlights the dramatic effect of the rocket's unexpected appearance. Near the boy, a toppled bucket adds to the sense of sudden disruption. This illustration by Peter Newell, known for his whimsical and inventive approach to storytelling, encapsulates a moment frozen in time, filled with action and reaction. It invites viewers to ponder the story behind the rocket's journey and the boy's subsequent adventure. Engaging with themes of unexpected discovery and the intersection of the everyday with the fantastical, Newell's work continues to enchant and engage audiences, encouraging a delightful suspension of disbelief.
