More about this artwork

The captivating artwork titled "Evening Landscape" painted in 1921 by Norwegian artist Thorvald Erichsen, invites viewers into a serene, yet emotionally stirring natural scene. As indicated by its title, the painting portrays the calm and majesty of a landscape at dusk. Erichsen, known for his expressive landscapes, uses a vivid palette to enhance the mood and texture of the scene. In the foreground, undulating fields painted with bold reds and purples suggest the richness of the earth, possibly at the height of autumn. These warm tones contrast beautifully with the various shades of green that depict lush trees and grasses, engulfing the middle ground. This lush vegetative cover suggests a secluded vale, hidden away from the bustle of human inhabitation.Dominated by a high horizon line, the background features gentle, rolling hills that fade into soft blues and purples, suggesting their distance from the viewer and adding depth to the composition. Above, the sky is rendered in delicate pinks and yellows, capturing the essence of a fading evening light that casts a warm glow over the entire landscape.A striking feature of this painting is the solitary tall structure, possibly a tree trunk, standing defiantly in the right section of the middle ground. This element acts as a focal point, drawing the eye and adding a sense of lonely permanence amidst the transient light and colors of the evening.

Thorvald Erichsen was a Norwegian Post-Impressionist painter; primarily known for landscapes and still lifes.

Thorvald Erichsen was born in Trondheim, Norway. He was the son of Ernst Erichsen (1820-1869) and Trine Jensine Rian (1829-1884). Erichsen's father was a confectioner and died when Erichsen was very young.

Although at first he wanted to be a pianist, in 1886 he began studying law, then dropped out and attended a painting school run by Knud Bergslien, where he completed a course in arts and crafts. He later moved to Copenhagen, where he became a student of Christian Zahrtmann, who had a greater influence on his artistic development.
