More about this artwork

In this serene and expansive landscape painting by the esteemed French artist Claude Lorrain, the canvas titled "Jacob with Laban and His Daughters" masterfully combines natural beauty with classical storytelling. Depicted in the artwork is the biblical tale from the Book of Genesis, which narrates the story of Jacob meeting his future wives, Rachel and Leah, daughters of Laban.Set against a pastoral backdrop, the painting features Jacob, dressed in a humble shepherd’s attire, in a poignant discussion with Laban and his daughters. The figures are gracefully positioned near the foreground amongst a lush grouping of trees, contributing a sense of intimacy and depth to the scene. The landscape extends into a sweeping vista that features grazing sheep, symbolizing the pastoral life and Jacob’s future as a shepherd of Laban’s flocks.Claude Lorrain is renowned for his skill in portraying light, and this painting is no exception. The soft, diffused light of dawn or dusk casts a peaceful glow over the landscape, enhancing the idyllic and tranquil mood. The distant castle and the rolling hills fading into the horizon encourage the viewer's eye to wander through the canvas, exploring the delicately rendered details of this harmonious natural setting.

Claude Lorrain (1600 – 23 November 1682) was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher of the Baroque era. He spent most of his life in Italy, and is one of the earliest important artists, apart from his contemporaries in Dutch Golden Age painting, to concentrate on landscape painting. His landscapes are usually turned into the more prestigious genre of history paintings by the addition of a few small figures, typically representing a scene from the Bible or classical mythology.
