More about this artwork

Nils Kreuger's evocative painting titled "Summer Evening at Kalmarsund" captures the serene yet vibrant essence of a sunset by the sea, painted in 1904. This piece of art beckons the viewer to immerse themselves in the tranquility of a Nordic summer's evening. The painting predominantly showcases a dramatic and expansive sky, tinged with hues of orange, pink, and blue which suggest the sun is just setting below the horizon. The sky's vibrant colors reflect subtly onto the calm, shallow waters of Kalmarsund, which is dotted with dark rocks and ripples that absorb and mirror the sky's colors. In the foreground, the rugged dark coastline stretches across the canvas, interspersed with gentle patches of greenery and hints of wild blue flowers, adding vibrancy and life to the dark earth. The textured application of paint, coupled with the interplay of light and shadow, creates a dynamic yet harmonious composition that draws the eye across the water and sky.Kreuger’s use of pointillist-like techniques, with stippled brush strokes, instills a sense of movement and energy within the seemingly still scene, making this a compelling depiction of a fleeting moment of natural beauty in the Swedish landscape.
