More about this artwork

Explore the serene winter charm captured by Aert van der Neer in his evocative painting, "Winter Landscape with Skaters on a Frozen River." This exquisite artwork celebrates the simplicity and joy of a wintry day as experienced in the 17th-century Dutch countryside. The viewer is drawn into a vast, open landscape under a subdued, cloud-filled sky, which diffuses a soft winter light upon the scene. The frozen river at the center boasts a lively gathering of townsfolk, partaking in the timeless joy of ice skating. The figures are rendered in meticulous detail, from children hesitantly taking their first slides, to couples enjoying the crisp air, and solitary skaters tracing swift arcs on the ice.To the left, leafless trees frame the scene, their bare branches etched against the winter sky, providing a stark contrast to the muted colors of the landscape. In the distance, the small village emerges with its characteristic Dutch architecture, including a windmill that quietly presides over the tranquil setting. A gentle palette of grays and blues dominates the canvas, punctuated by the earthy tones of the skaters' attire, which adds vibrancy and life to this peaceful winter idyll.Aert van der Neer's masterful use of light and composition not only portrays the enchanting landscape but also evokes the cold yet comforting atmosphere of winter, inviting viewers to reflect on the quiet beauty of the season.

Aert van der Neer, or Aernout or Artus (c. 1603 – 9 November 1677), was a landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, specializing in small night scenes lit only by moonlight and fires, and snowy winter landscapes, both often looking down a canal or river. He was a contemporary of Aelbert Cuyp and Meindert Hobbema, and like the latter he lived and died in comparative obscurity.
