More about this artwork

Exquisite in its calm and wintery depiction, Aert van der Neer's painting "Winter Landscape near a Town with Bare Trees" is a masterpiece of serene natural beauty and a bustling community life from the mid-17th century. The painting reveals a frozen tableau where the chill of winter has gripped the earth and the river has turned to ice, serving as a playground for villagers. In this atmospheric landscape, van der Neer captures the delicate nuances of light and shadow with muted tones and soft, cloudy skies that suggest the quiet cold of the season. The painting features bare, leafless trees standing stark against the wintery sky, their twisted forms echoing the rawness of the season.Foreground activity draws the viewer's attention to figures engaged in typical winter pastimes, such as ice skating and gathering on the frozen waterway. These figures are depicted in detailed period dress, giving us a glimpse into the fashion and social habits of the era.The background is equally rich with detail, featuring snow-covered rooftops of a nearby town, and a church spire that rises prominently, indicating the community's gathering place. A sense of life and survival in harsh conditions is presented subtly but powerfully in this classic example of Dutch landscape painting.

Aert van der Neer, or Aernout or Artus (c. 1603 – 9 November 1677), was a landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, specializing in small night scenes lit only by moonlight and fires, and snowy winter landscapes, both often looking down a canal or river. He was a contemporary of Aelbert Cuyp and Meindert Hobbema, and like the latter he lived and died in comparative obscurity.
