More about this artwork

"Squared" by Julius Caesar Ibbetson is a captivating painting that draws the viewer into a rustic, yet dynamic scene. This artwork showcases Ibbetson's distinctive ability to blend mood with movement. It features two figures in what appears to be a wooded area, surrounded by gnarled trees that enhance the feeling of a natural, untamed environment. The painting is divided into action and reaction. On the left, one figure, dressed in vibrant red and yellow, is caught in the midst of swinging an axe at a large piece of wood, embodying a display of strength and concentration. The motion is captured with vigorous brush strokes and vivid color, portraying the intensity of the moment. On the right, another figure stands with a look of surprise or alarm, possibly at the action of his companion, adding a narrative element to the scene. This figure's body language and facial expression inject a sense of immediacy and perhaps concern. The use of muted, earthy tones in the background, contrasted with the brighter colors of the figures, focalizes the action and adds depth to the composition. Ibbetson's skill in rendering scenes of everyday life with emotional depth and dynamic movement is evident in this painting, inviting viewers to ponder the story behind these figures and their environment.

Julius Sergius von Klever was a Baltic German landscape painter.

His father was a chemist who taught pharmacology at the Veterinary Institute. He displayed artistic talent at an early age and took lessons from Konstantin von Kügelgen. After completing his primary education, was enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts where, at his father's insistence, he studied architecture. After a short time, however, he began to take landscape painting classes; first with Sokrat Vorobiev, then Mikhail Clodt.
