More about this artwork

Capturing the serene essence of a fishing scene in Aceh, "Atjehsche hengelaar" (Acehnese Fisherman) is a striking woodcut print created by Dutch-Indonesian artist Johannes Frederik Engelbert ten Klooster in 1930. This artwork exemplifies Ten Klooster's mastery in using bold contrasts and fine details to depict everyday life in Indonesia during the early 20th century. In this evocative piece, the scene unfolds on a quiet riverbank. Two figures, an adult in a traditional conical hat and a child, are seated in a slender boat. The adult, draped in loose and flowing garments that suggest movement and a gentle breeze, attentively handles a fishing rod, seemingly casting into the tranquil waters. The child, sitting close by, appears to watch the water or perhaps the surrounding nature, embodying a sense of peaceful companionship. The background is minimally detailed yet effective, with silhouettes of lush trees and distant water reflections suggesting a secluded and calm fishing spot. The use of stark black and white lines not only enhances the texture and depth of the scene but also highlights the reflective quality of water, creating a mirror effect that draws the viewer's eye deep into the landscape."Artjehsche hengelaar" is more than just a depiction of a fishing moment; it is a reflection of cultural identity and a connection to the natural world, rendered with simplicity yet profound expressiveness by Ten Klooster.
