More about this artwork

Dive into the intricate details of Johannes Bosboom’s architectural study, "Studie van de bovenste verdieping van een hoekhuis" (Study of the Top Floor of a Corner House), painted between 1827 and 1891. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's fascination with capturing the essence of structural and architectural elements during the 19th century. In this painting, Bosboom focuses on the upper story of an aged corner house, depicted with a remarkable attention to detail and texture. The artwork showcases Bosboom’s skill in rendering materials, as seen in the wooden beams and timbers, which exhibit signs of wear and character. This detailed observation highlights the building's timeworn allure and the resilience embedded in its framework. At the center of the composition is a striking ornamental sculpture that appears to depict a human figure, adding a touch of historical and artistic importance to the structure. Beneath this, an old-fashioned street lamp and a modest balcony add layers of history and functionality, connecting the structure to everyday life of its time.Rendered with a delicate yet confident use of watercolors, the texture and tone of the painting evoke a sense of nostalgia and respect for historical architecture. The somewhat muted color palette complements the theme of decay and endurance, engaging viewers to reflect on the past lives that might have intersected with this corner of the world.

Johannes Bosboom was a Dutch painter and watercolorist of the Hague School, known especially for his paintings of church interiors.

At the age of 14 he became a student of Bartholomeus van Hove and painted in his studio along with Van Hove's son Hubertus van Hove. Together they worked on the pieces of scenery that Van Hove created for the Royal Theatre in The Hague. In addition, Bosboom took lessons from 1831 to 1835 and again from 1839 to 1840 in the Hague Academy of Art. Here he also made the acquaintance of Anthonie Waldorp and Wijnand Nuyen.
