More about this artwork

Warwick Goble's enchanting illustration, "Cannetella Released from the Cask," vividly brings to life a scene from a lesser-known fairy tale. Dated 1911, this artwork captures with exquisite detail and rich color the moment when Cannetella, a beautiful maiden, emerges from a wooden cask where she had been imprisoned. In the painting, Cannetella is depicted stepping gracefully out of the cask, with her long, flowing hair cascading down her colorful garment which swirls around her as if catching the wind. Her expression, soft yet weary, hints at the ordeals she may have faced while confined. The scene is set against a backdrop of ancient stone architecture, likely the interior of a castle, which enhances the narrative's fairy-tale quality.Adding to the drama of her release is the figure of a royal man, standing beside her. He is adorned in a resplendent blue robe emblazoned with gold embroidery and wears a crown, suggesting his noble status. His posture and facial expression convey a mixture of relief and admiration as he witnesses Cannetella's emergence into freedom.Goble's use of soft watercolors lends a dreamlike quality to the painting, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. The detailed patterns on the characters’ clothes and the florid ornamentation in their surroundings create a visually rich tableau that captures the viewer’s imagination. This painting not only illustrates a captivating moment but also showcases Goble’s mastery in illustrating fairy tales, making the fantastical elements believable and enthralling to viewers of all ages.
