More about this artwork

Delve into a captivating vista of Hansteensgate as seen through the eyes of distinguished Norwegian painter Harriet Backer. Painted in 1915, "View from my Balcony, Hansteensgate" provides an evocative glimpse of urban life in early 20th-century Oslo. From her unique vantage point, Backer captures a serene, yet lively neighborhood scene. The painting is dominated by the soft earthy tones of the buildings contrasted subtly with the vibrant greens of lush trees which seem to breathe life into the urban landscape. The buildings are depicted with a blend of precision and abstraction, their details softened, perhaps to convey the fleeting quality of light and shadow playing across their facades as the day winds down. The central focus of the composition is a sloping street, leading the viewer's eye toward a distant horizon under a sky brushed with gentle strokes of blue and peach, suggesting either dawn or dusk. Adding a touch of vitality to the otherwise tranquil setting are the silhouettes of figures on what appears to be a balcony. These figures, although rendered in minimalistic style, inject a human element, hinting at the daily lives and routines that pulse quietly behind the façade of this urban setting."View from my Balcony, Hansteensgate" stands out as a testament to Backer’s skill in capturing both the physical and atmospheric qualities of a moment and place.
