More about this artwork

"Laziness" (1896-1900) by Ramón Casas, is a compelling artwork that dazzlingly captures a moment of serene repose. This painting features a woman lying languidly on a bed, her body draped effortlessly across white sheets. The soft, diffuse light filters through a window, illuminating her face and highlighting the gentle contours of her form. Her attire, a simple nightgown, complements the theme of unguarded leisure, enhancing the overall sense of tranquility and detachment from the hustle and bustle of daily life.Casas's skill in handling light and shadow brings a delicate realism to this intimate scene, while his composition leaves much to the imagination, inviting viewers to ponder what thoughts might be crossing the woman's mind. The subdued palette, dominated by whites and muted earth tones, contributes to the painting’s quiet atmosphere, encapsulating a moment frozen in time where the rest of the world seems to fade away.

Ramon Casas i Carbó was a Catalan artist. Living through a turbulent time in the history of his native Barcelona, he was known as a portraitist, sketching and painting the intellectual, economic, and political elite of Barcelona, Paris, Madrid, and beyond. He was also known for his paintings of crowd scenes ranging from the audience at a bullfight to the assembly for an execution to rioters in the Barcelona streets (El garrot). Also a graphic designer, his posters and postcards helped to define the Catalan art movement known as modernisme.
