More about this artwork

Experience the timeless beauty of nature captured in Ferdinand Hodler’s remarkable painting, “Waterfall in the Savoy Region”. This enchanting landscape invites viewers into a serene, rocky gorge where a waterfall cascades gracefully into a tranquil pool below. Hodler's unique approach to this scene embodies a rich tapestry of textures and colors, showcasing his mastery in portraying natural settings with vivid detail and emotive power. In the foreground, the rocky bed is littered with stones of various shapes and sizes, perhaps polished smooth by the relentless flow of water. The waterfall itself is a striking feature, drawing the eye with its silvery ribbons of water that splash into the catch basin. Surrounding the waterfall, lush greenery adds a vibrant contrast to the stony grays and earthy browns of the rocky cliff faces. Light and shadow play across the scene, suggesting the dynamic interplay between the elements and adding depth and realism to the painting. This piece not only reflects Hodler's incredible skill as a painter but also his profound appreciation for the natural world. “Waterfall in the Savoy Region” is more than just a depiction of a scenic location; it is an invitation to pause and reflect on the beauty and peace that nature offers.

Ferdinand Hodler (March 14, 1853 – May 19, 1918) was one of the best-known Swiss painters of the nineteenth century. His early works were portraits, landscapes, and genre paintings in a realistic style. Later, he adopted a personal form of symbolism which he called "parallelism".
