More about this artwork

Marsden Hartley's "Song of Winter" is a captivating example of the artist's dynamic and emotive painting style, distinguished by its rich, impasto strokes and vibrant palette. In this work, Hartley interprets the winter landscape not as a bleak or barren expanse, but as a canvas alive with color and movement. At first glance, the painting pulses with swirling patterns of pinks, blues, greens, and whites, an abstraction that reveals a wintry scene beneath its textured surface. The mountains roll across the horizon in varying shades of blue and mauve, suggesting the shadow and light cast by low-hanging clouds. Closer inspection reveals forests of green and strokes of bright red and yellow, evoking the tenacious life that persists even in the cold.Hartley's ability to blend abstraction with naturalistic elements gives "Song of Winter" a unique lyrical quality, as if the landscape itself is in motion—twisting, turning, and singing the complex song of the winter season. This painting invites viewers to delve into the beauty and mystery of nature’s quieter, yet undeniably vibrant moments. This masterpiece is a testament to Hartley's masterful ability to convey emotion and movement through bold, expressive brushwork and a remarkable understanding of color.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
