More about this artwork

Artist: Edmund DulacEdmund Dulac's enchanting illustration titled "And in your joyous errand reach the spot" from 1909 captivates with its dreamlike portrayal of a serene moment in a mystical setting. In this eloquent scene, a richly attired woman gracefully balances a jug on her shoulder, as she offers a ripe peach to a young man who reaches up to take it. This exchange takes place in a tranquil atmosphere, surrounded by a group of people in a lush landscape. To the left, a seated man, with an intrigued expression, looks on while holding a glass, as if waiting for his turn to partake in the offering. The use of muted earth tones and the subtle interplay of light and shadow give the painting a timeless quality, evoking a sense of peace and harmony. Dulac's meticulous attention to the details of the garments and the natural surroundings enhances the ethereal feel of this idyllic gathering.

Edmund Dulac (born Edmond Dulac; 22 October 1882 – 25 May 1953) was a French-British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer. Born in Toulouse he studied law but later turned to the study of art at the École des Beaux-Arts. He moved to London early in the 20th century and in 1905 received his first commission to illustrate the novels of the Brontë Sisters. During World War I, Dulac produced relief books and when after the war the deluxe children's book market shrank he turned to magazine illustrations among other ventures. He designed banknotes during World War II and postage stamps, most notably those that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
