More about this artwork

by Hans ZatzkaIn the enchanting painting, "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not," by Hans Zatzka, we are drawn into an idyllic, romantic scene rich with allegorical elements and intricate details that evoke the style of the late 19th-century aesthetic movement. The painting depicts two young women in a lush, verdant setting, encapsulating both the beauty of nature and the intricate emotions of human love. The woman standing on the right, adorned in a vibrant array of colors with a golden yellow and deep green skirt, engages in the timeless game of plucking petals from a daisy, traditionally a symbol to divine true love's intent. Her expression reflects wistful hope and gentle anticipation. Beside her, reclining comfortably, is another young lady, wearing a soft peach-tone gown, surrounded by bountiful flowers that cascade onto her lap and spill onto the forest floor, enhancing the visual feast of floral abundance. In the background, a cherubic statue on a pedestal, possibly Cupid, the god of desire, erotic love, attraction, and affection, adds a mythological dimension to the scene, reinforcing themes of love. Shadow and light play dramatically across the scene, with the light seeming to spotlight the women and the flowers, giving an almost divine look to their beauty and actions. The artist, Hans Zatzka, known for his mastery in depicting allegorical and fantasy figures, has beautifully illustrated not just a moment but the emotion of countless such moments—where heartstrings are tugged with each petal's fate.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph BernardJ. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
