More about this artwork

Welcome to this exploration of Marsden Hartley's intriguing painting, "Movement No. 5, Provincetown Houses," created in 1916. This piece uniquely captures the essence of the Provincetown, Massachusetts landscape, transforming it through the lens of abstract expressionism. At first glance, the viewer is struck by the bold geometric forms and the sharp contrast of colors employed by Hartley. The painting is dominated by a set of white houses, their sharp, triangular rooftops pointing heavenward. Each building is outlined in dark, confident strokes, grounding them starkly against the background. The focal point is an unusually tall, slender tower positioned centrally, its multiple windows punctuating the facade and drawing the eye upward, suggesting both monumentality and isolation.Hartley's brushwork subtly varies across the canvas. The houses and tower are depicted with thick, impasto white paint, which stands in stark contrast to the more muted, flatly applied browns and tan colors of what might be interpreted as cliffs or hills in the background. The palette of navy and deep oranges further lends the painting an atmospheric, almost surreal quality, enhancing the emotional impact of the piece."Movement No. 5, Provincetown Houses" encapsulates a dynamic tension between the abstract and the representational, inviting viewers to interpret the interplay of shapes and shadows. The painting pulsates with a rhythm perhaps suggestive of the artist’s internal experience of Provincetown rather than a literal depiction of its landscape. This Hartley painting invites deep contemplation, offering each viewer a personal journey through shapes that hint at familiar forms while defying exact definition.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
