More about this artwork

"Junge mit Federhut," painted in 1910 by German artist August Macke, is a striking example of the transformational expressionism that marked the early 20th century art scene. This portrait showcases a young male subject adorned with a feather-hatted, vibrant green cap, which catches the eye with its natural, deep hues and ornamental detail. The feather, dark and curving elegantly along the hat's side, adds a dynamic and somewhat whimsical contrast to the starkness of the boy’s expression.Macke’s use of color in this piece is bold and communicative. The subject's pale, almost luminescent face stands sharply against the rich tones of his attire—a bright blue shirt topped with a vivid red tie. These color choices are not just aesthetic; they subtly narrate the youth’s vitality and possibly his emotional state. The blue and red might symbolize the depth of his youthful zeal and passion, respectively. The brushwork, with its visible strokes in the background, adds a textural depth to the painting, emphasizing the raw, emotional resonance that Macke was known for. His style bridges the gap between realism and abstraction, focusing on emotional representation rather than detailed accuracy."Junge mit Federhut" not only exemplifies August Macke’s talent in manipulation of color and form to express deeper meanings but also reflects the experimental spirit of the Expressionist movement, which sought to convey subjective emotions rather than objective reality.

August Macke (3 January 1887 – 26 September 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him.
