More about this artwork

Landscape, New Mexico (1919 and 1920) by Marsden Hartley captures the rugged and vibrant spirit of the American Southwest. The painting is a vivid portrayal of the New Mexican terrain, characterized by its expansive skies, rolling mountains in the distance, and the distinctive, deeply carved canyons that define much of the region's topography. In the foreground, Hartley presents a chaotic tangle of rocks and shrubs, using bold, expressive colors and dynamic, almost tactile brushstrokes to represent the hardy flora clinging to life in the arid climate. The varied hues of brown, red, and green suggest the rich mineral palette of New Mexico’s earth, contrasted starkly against the cool, sweeping blues and purples of the distant mountains and the overcast sky above. This work exemplifies Hartley's fascination with nature's power and his ability to translate the emotional and spiritual aspects of the landscape onto canvas. The choice of colors and the rough, almost aggressive application of paint communicate not just a scene, but an experience, reflecting the profound impact the landscape of New Mexico had on him.Landscape, New Mexico offers not only a glimpse into the natural beauty of the American Southwest but also into the heart and mind of Marsden Hartley, one of the key figures in American Modernism.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
