More about this artwork

Discover the captivating artwork "Sitzende in Strümpfen" (Seated in Stockings), created in 1924 by expressionist artist Otto Mueller, a significant member of the German avant-garde group Die Brücke. This striking lithograph features a female figure, depicted in a simplified yet evocative form that is typical of Mueller's approach to body and expression. In this artwork, the viewer encounters a solitary woman, seated, and drawing her knees close to her body—an intimate posture that speaks volumes about the themes of vulnerability and introspection. The starkness of the black ink used in the lithograph contrasts deeply with the plain background, emphasizing the contours and the essential forms of the figure's body. The use of rough, almost abrupt lines adds a texture that makes the emotion within the piece palpable.Mueller's focus on the expressive potential of the human form aligns with the ethos of Die Brücke artists, who often ventured beyond the norms of traditional portrayal to evoke deeper emotional resonances. "Sitzende in Strümpfen" not only captures the physical appearance of its subject but also invites viewers to perceive beyond the surface, into the psychological landscape of the depicted figure. This piece is a profound example of Otto Mueller’s mastery in expressing complex human conditions through minimalistic yet powerful artistic strokes.

Otto Müller was a German painter and printmaker of the Die Brücke expressionist movement.

Mueller was born in Liebau (now Lubawka, Kamienna Góra County), Kreis Landeshut, Silesia. Between 1890 and 1892 he was trained in lithography in Görlitz and Breslau. From 1894 to 1896 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and continued his study in Munich during 1898. He left Munich's academy after Franz von Stuck classified him as untalented.
