More about this artwork

Hans Zatzka, a master of mythical and allegorical themes, graces us with "Cupid," a painting that encapsulates the playful yet profound essence of classical mythology. At first glance, the viewer is drawn into a vibrant, floral dreamscape where the delicate dance between divinity and whimsy unfolds. The composition centers on two figures: a graceful nymph and a cherubic figure of Cupid. The nymph, radiant and ethereal, is portrayed in a pose of gentle motion. Her form is adorned with a flowing robe in hues of soft pink and yellow, which seem to ripple like sunlight through clouds. Her gaze, directed towards the plump little Cupid, is filled with a mix of amusement and maternal tenderness.Cupid himself is perched on a floral column, his chubby limbs and playful expression embodying the impish nature of love’s messenger. With wings fluttering and a coy smile, he seems ready to leap into mischief or flight, adding a dynamic energy to the serene setting. The surrounding scenery is lush and abundantly detailed, with flowers, foliage, and classical ornaments enhancing the sense of a hidden, enchanted realm. The dappling light filters through the trees, casting intricate shadows and illuminating the scene with a warm, golden glow.In "Cupid," Hans Zatzka invites us to linger in a world where beauty and fantasy intertwine effortlessly.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph BernardJ. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
