More about this artwork

"Portrait Of A One-Year-Old Girl Of The Van Der Burch Family" is a captivating oil painting by Aelbert Cuyp, a renowned Dutch Golden Age painter known for his landscapes and portraiture. This particular work, created in 1641, showcases Cuyp’s intricate skill and attention to detail in rendering the innocence and gentle disposition of a young child. The painting portrays a one-year-old girl from the van der Burch family, dressed in a lavish, traditional 17th-century costume. Her attire, composed of a white dress adorned with fine lace and patterned with gold embroidery, exemplifies the opulence typical of the period. The accentuation of light blue ribbons and delicate gold chains adds to the richness of the visual texture and denotes the social status of her family. Her facial expression is serene and her gaze slightly averted, engaging the viewer with a sense of quiet contemplation, which is striking considering her tender age. The artist’s use of soft, luminous hues on her face contrasts with the darker, muted background, highlighting her figure and cherubic features further. This portrait not only serves as a historical glimpse into the clothing and aesthetic preferences of the Dutch elite in the 1600s but also as a personal, timeless capture of childhood innocence and the meticulous craftsmanship of Aelbert Cuyp.
