More about this artwork

"Süße Grüße oder Liebesboten" (Sweet Greetings or Messengers of Love) is a captivating oil painting by the Austrian artist Hans Zatzka, renowned for his skill in depicting ethereal figures and romantic fantasy scenes. In this exquisite work, Zatzka transports us to a sumptuous interior illuminated by the warm glow of a chandelier, setting the stage for a scene of enchanting intimacy. At the heart of the painting, a young woman reclines gracefully on a luxurious bed adorned with rich, floral textiles. Her expression is one of tender reverie as she supports her head with a delicate hand, her gaze reflecting a mix of contemplation and daydreaming. The bed, dressed in vibrant greens and accented with floral embellishments, cradles her in a sea of silky folds and textures, further enhancing the dreamlike quality of the composition.Adding a touch of whimsy and playfulness, two cherubic figures engage with the lady. One cherub, standing at the edge of the bed, offers her a bouquet of fresh flowers, symbolizing affection and the sweet sentiments of the heart. Another cherub nestles close behind her, whispering into her ear, perhaps conveying secret messages of love or sweet nothings that add to her gentle smile.Flowers scattered across the scene and a rich array of colors—from the deep blues and greens of the tapestry to the soft pastels of the clothing—create a visual feast that is quintessentially Zatzka.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph BernardJ. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
