More about this artwork

Anna Boberg's evocative painting, "Lofoten in Violet. Study," produced in 1934, provides viewers a glimpse into the rugged and enigmatic beauty of the Lofoten Islands in Norway. This stunning work showcases Boberg’s unique ability to capture not just the scenery but the emotional and sublime quality of the Nordic landscape. In this painting, Boberg employs thick, expressive brushstrokes that infuse the canvas with dynamic texture. The mountains of Lofoten loom in the background, rendered in shades of violet and pink, suggesting the soft glow of either a rising or setting sun. The sky swirls with creamy whites and hints of blue, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the scene. In the foreground, a dark blue sea, alive with Boberg's vivid brushwork, leads the eye to a solitary lighthouse — a symbol of guidance amidst the serene yet untamed natural world. This particular focal point anchors the composition, providing a sense of scale and the enduring human presence within the vast forces of nature. The varying tones of violet and blue not only create a visual harmony but also evoke feelings of tranquillity and majesty, beckoning viewers to immerse themselves in the serene yet powerful landscapes of Northern Norway.

Anna Katarina Boberg (1864 – 1935) was a Swedish artist married to prominent architect Ferdinand Boberg. Boberg was a person of many artistic pursuits; initially she worked with ceramics and textiles and besides painting she also worked with set design and writing. She was of an artistic family, but never received any formal training in the arts, and is considered an autodidact. Many of her paintings are of northern Norway, which became Boberg's main focus for many years after a trip there in 1901. These works were not received very well in Sweden, but did much better in Paris. Boberg spent a great deal of time in the area near Lofoten in Norway, where she eventually had a cabin, and she made many of those trips on her own.
