More about this artwork

Explore an enchanting undersea realm in "The Mermaid Pl 3," a captivating artwork by notable French-born, British-naturalized illustrator Edmund Dulac. This mesmerizing painting illustrates Dulac's exceptional ability to blend mystique with a rich color palette, creating a dreamlike underwater scene that invites viewers to a world beyond our own.In "The Mermaid Pl 3," Dulac depicts a graceful mermaid descending through the depths of an intricate seascape filled with an array of curvaceous, organic forms that evoke the undulating rhythms of the ocean. The mermaid, rendered with a pale, luminescent complexion, contrasts vividly against the darker, muted tones of the sea. Her flowing hair and the fluid lines of her body harmonize with the swirling surroundings, enhancing the painting’s ethereal quality. The underwater environment is detailed with fantasy-driven elements—a glimpse into Dulac's imagination. The sea is alive with ornate, fantastical sea creatures and whimsically twisted seaplants. Intricate textures and decorations on the creatures suggest influences from Art Nouveau, which often features flowing, natural forms and elaborate, decorative details.Additionally, the remnants of human artifacts, possibly shipwrecks, are entwined in the seabed, hinting at tales of voyages and adventures lost to the deep. These elements not only embellish the narrative of the mermaid's oceanic domain but also remind viewers of the mysterious allure and perils hidden beneath the water's surface."The Mermaid Pl 3" perfectly showcases Dulac’s artistry and his ability to evoke a sense of wonder and delicate otherworldliness.

Edmund Dulac (born Edmond Dulac; 22 October 1882 – 25 May 1953) was a French-British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer. Born in Toulouse he studied law but later turned to the study of art at the École des Beaux-Arts. He moved to London early in the 20th century and in 1905 received his first commission to illustrate the novels of the Brontë Sisters. During World War I, Dulac produced relief books and when after the war the deluxe children's book market shrank he turned to magazine illustrations among other ventures. He designed banknotes during World War II and postage stamps, most notably those that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
