More about this artwork

Explore the enchanting depths of Edmund Dulac's imagination with "The Mermaid Pl 1," a captivating piece from 1911 that illustrates the mystical allure of underwater realms. In this ethereal artwork, Dulac transports viewers to a submerged wonderland where a graceful mermaid interacts harmoniously with the marine life around her.Central to the composition is the mermaid herself, depicted with a beautifully detailed tail that blends seamlessly into the rocky underwater landscape. Her interaction with a curious fish, which she gently touches with a finger, adds a sense of intimate connection between the aquatic beings. Surrounding the mermaid are various elements of sea life, including another fish and an eel, enhancing the painting's rich narrative of underwater interaction.Dulac's mastery of watercolors is evident in the soft washes of color that suffuse the scene, creating a dreamlike quality that seems to blur the boundaries between water and sky. Coral, seashells, and marine flora are rendered with intricate detail, contributing to the scene's dense, textured appearance."The Mermaid Pl 1" not only showcases Dulac's iconic illustrative style but also evokes the timeless fascination with mythical creatures of the deep.

Edmund Dulac (born Edmond Dulac; 22 October 1882 – 25 May 1953) was a French-British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer. Born in Toulouse he studied law but later turned to the study of art at the École des Beaux-Arts. He moved to London early in the 20th century and in 1905 received his first commission to illustrate the novels of the Brontë Sisters. During World War I, Dulac produced relief books and when after the war the deluxe children's book market shrank he turned to magazine illustrations among other ventures. He designed banknotes during World War II and postage stamps, most notably those that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
