More about this artwork

Dive into the tumultuous world depicted in John Martin's masterpiece "The Fall of the Rebel Angels," crafted in 1825. This breathtaking painting encapsulates a pivotal moment in biblical narratives, showcasing the expulsion of the rebel angels from Heaven, a theme rich with drama and divine retribution. In this epic visual representation, Martin captures the chaotic and violent descent of the angels through a dark, cavernous abyss. The composition is intense and dynamic, thrusts of light cutting through the overwhelming shadows to highlight the anguished expressions and contorted forms of the falling angels. Their figures, beautifully detailed and almost ethereal, clash with the stark, rugged textures of the rocky surroundings, enhancing the sense of peril and downfall. The artist’s use of sharp contrasts between light and dark not only amplifies the emotional impact of the scene but also underscores the spiritual battle between good and evil, a central theme in many of Martin's works. The painting’s dramatic scale and the masterful play of light and shadow evoke a sense of awe and fear, pulling viewers into the depths of the celestial turmoil.John Martin, known for his spectacular and grandiose landscapes, integrates his signature style into this work, making it a profound piece that not only tells a story but also evokes deep contemplation on themes of judgment, justice, and fate.

John Martin was an English Romantic painter, engraver and illustrator. He was celebrated for his typically vast and melodramatic paintings of religious subjects and fantastic compositions, populated with minute figures placed in imposing landscapes. Martin's paintings, and the prints made from them, enjoyed great success with the general public—in 1821 Thomas Lawrence referred to him as "the most popular painter of his day"—but were lambasted by John Ruskin and other critics.
