More about this artwork

Nikolai Triik's pencil sketch "Lapse portree" (Portrait of a Child) from 1912 offers viewers an intimate glimpse into the subtle expressiveness captured by the artist. This delicate work features the face of a young child, rendered with soft, thoughtful strokes that highlight both innocence and a contemplative depth.Set against a plain background, the simplicity of the composition draws all attention to the child’s features—the gentle, round cheeks, the slightly pursed lips, and the deep, reflective eyes. The child’s hair, lightly sketched, falls in loose curls, adding a touch of whimsy and youth.Triik’s ability to convey complex human emotions through minimal lines is evident in this drawing. The child’s gaze, seemingly directed towards something out of view, invites viewers to ponder what thoughts might be stirring behind those eyes. This piece not only showcases Triik's skill as a portrait artist but also serves as a captivating testament to the introspective moments of childhood.Perhaps most striking is the economy of line Triik employs, which emphasizes not just the form but the feeling of the subject, making "Lapse portree" a memorable piece that resonates with viewers across different ages and times.
