More about this artwork

This evocative painting by John Warwick Smith, a prominent British watercolourist, captures the serene entrance to the Grotto of Posillipo in Naples. Crafted with delicate attention to detail, Smith's work transports viewers to this naturally formed tunnel, renowned in the 18th century as a picturesque landmark along the Neapolitan coastline. In the foreground, the painting features an ancient inscription stone with engravings, subtly hinting at the historical significance of the place. The grotto itself, ensconced in shadow, forms a mysterious archway, inviting curiosity about what lies beyond. Warm light washes over the rugged cliffs, and vegetation sporadically adorns the rocky surfaces, lending a touch of the wild and untamed nature that commands the scene. This piece not only showcases John Warwick Smith's adept handling of light and shadow but also evokes the allure of Italian landscapes that enchanted many artists and travelers of his time.

John "Warwick" Smith was a British watercolour landscape painter and illustrator.

Smith was born at Irthington, near Carlisle, Cumberland, the son of a gardener to the Gilpin family, and educated at St. Bees. The fortunate social connection allowed him to study art under the animal painter Sawrey Gilpin.
