More about this artwork

Marsden Hartley's 1918 painting, "Valdez Hills," serves as a vibrant testament to the artist's profound ability to capture the raw, dynamic essence of the American landscape. In this compelling artwork, we are transported to the rugged terrains of the Valdez area, where the hills stretch upward into the sky, melding seamlessly with the clouds above.Hartley uses sweeping strokes and a rich palette to imbue this scene with life and vitality. The painting oscillates between the cool blues and soft greys of the sky and the earthy greens, vivid yellows, and deep purples of the hills. This color variation not only emphasizes the sculptural quality of the landforms but also the diverse textures that define them. The brushwork in "Valdez Hills" is spontaneous and expressive, creating a sense of motion that suggests the unpredictable shifts in weather and light that often define mountainous landscapes. Looking closely, one sees how Hartley manipulates color and form to portray the intertwined dance of shadow and light, which moves across the folds of the hills, evoking a feeling of the sublime."Valdez Hills" is more than a landscape; it is a reflection of Hartley's emotional and spiritual connection to nature. It invites viewers to step into a world where the grandeur of the natural environment is mirrored by the boldness of the artist's vision, making it a powerful piece in any collection.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
