More about this artwork

"Starena" (1925-1933) by Zolo Palugyay is an evocative piece that captures a poignant, introspective moment. The painting portrays a figure in a thick, enveloping shawl or coat, seated in what appears to be a humble interior setting. The predominance of deep green tones applied with broad, expressive strokes conveys a sense of weighted solitude or melancholy. The background and surroundings are sketched with minimal detail, drawing attention predominantly to the central figure and their pensive posture. The warm yellow tones of the background contrast with the greens, imbuing the painting with a raw emotional intensity that is both striking and contemplative.Palugyay's use of color and abstract form creates an intimate atmosphere that invites viewers to reflect on the emotions and inner thoughts of the depicted subject.
