More about this artwork

In this intimate sketch, titled "Frau mit Kind" (Woman with Child), dated 1907, German Expressionist artist August Macke captivates us with a moment of maternal tenderness. Drawn with colored pastels, the composition showcases Macke's penchant for simple yet profound representations, using vibrant lines and gentle shading to convey warmth and closeness. In this piece, the viewer is drawn to a mother holding her child closely, their faces nestling together in a loving embrace. The use of muted earth tones combined with hints of blue and green adds a dreamlike quality to the scene, suggesting a serene moment suspended in time. Despite the economy of detail, Macke masterfully captures the emotional depth between parent and child—the soft gaze of the mother, protective and loving, paired with the child's calm repose.Macke's work often explored daily life and personal relationships, and "Frau mit Kind" exemplifies his ability to extract the extraordinary from the ordinary. This sketch not only reflects the bond between mother and child but also invites the viewer to reflect on the universal themes of love, protection, and the simplicity of human connection.

August Macke (3 January 1887 – 26 September 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him.
