More about this artwork

The painting titled "Durchs Schlüsselloch geschaut" (Peeking Through the Keyhole) by Hans Zatzka transports viewers into an intimate and whimsical moment captured in a delightfully ethereal style. This artwork showcases Zatzka’s renowned talent for infusing light and vivacious details into his compositions. At the center of the painting sits a charming figure, a young woman adorned with soft, fluttering angel wings and a carefree expression. Her pose is relaxed and playful, seated amidst lush drapery and scattered floral motifs that add to the scene’s enchantment. The viewer’s eye is drawn to her warm, engaging gaze and the subtle, inviting smile playing on her lips. The backdrop is richly decorated, hinting at a luxurious, albeit slightly disordered, setting with a red velvet stool and scattered garments enhancing the sense of private indulgence. The use of a keyhole-shaped canvas adds an element of voyeurism, suggesting that we are glimpsing a private world not meant for public eyes, thereby heightening the allure and mystery of the scene.Zatzka’s use of vibrant colors and dynamic textures brings the scene to life, ensuring that each element, from the feathers on the wings to the petals on the floor, contributes to a sense of movement and vitality.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph BernardJ. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
