More about this artwork

Besiegt, a captivating painting by the acclaimed artist Hans Zatzka, ushers viewers to a fantastical realm where the enchantment of myth meets the delicate touch of Victorian sensibilities. This artwork presents a playful yet serene scene set in an overgrown, flower-filled garden space that brims with the lushness of nature. In the center, we find a young woman clad in a flowing teal gown, her expression one of playful surrender as she lounges beside an ancient stone fountain, seemingly toppled over in a moment of carefree abandon. Her pose is languid, her cheeks tinted with the flush of mirth, as she interacts with two cherubic figures adorned with delicate, translucent wings, hovering around her with an air of mischievous charm. The joviality of the scene is enhanced by the vividness of the colors used. Zatzka’s skillful handling of light brings a radiant quality to the garments and the gossamer wings of the angels, contrasting exquisitely with the dappling greens and floral hues of the background. Every brushstroke contributes to an atmosphere of whimsy and light-heartedness, crafting a world where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blissfully blur.Besiegt doesn't just capture a moment; it encapsulates a feeling of ethereal joy and whimsical storytelling through its rich details and vibrant composition.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph BernardJ. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
