More about this artwork

Dive into the profound artistic vision of Marsden Hartley with his captivating masterpiece "Yliaster (Paracelsus)," painted in 1932. This painting, rich with symbolic elements and a bold color palette, serves as a gateway to the spiritual and the metaphysical ideologies that fascinated the artist. At the center of the composition stands a towering structure, erupting with vibrant hues of red and orange, against the backdrop of a cosmic disk that seems to symbolize a celestial body. This central motif, possibly representing a spiritual beacon or a metaphysical monolith, sharply contrasts with the serene blue of the sky and the deep blues and blacks of the foreground pool. The surrounding landscape is minimal yet striking, with stark, red-brown mountainous forms that might be seen as both the physical earth and symbolic boundaries of the spiritual realm. The painting vibrates with an energy that is both grounding and transcendent, reflecting Hartley's ability to push visual boundaries and invite viewers into deeper contemplation."Yliaster (Paracelsus)" embodies Hartley’s exploration of themes from alchemy and mysticism, drawing inspiration from the legendary figure Paracelsus, an alchemist and philosopher who believed in the profound connection between the cosmos and the individual. Hartley's use of symbolic imagery creates a visual language that speaks to the eternal search for understanding beyond the visible world. This piece is a testament to Hartley’s unique position within the American modernist movement, showcasing his profound inquiry into the spiritual aspects of life and art.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
