More about this artwork

Explore the serene setting depicted in Félix Vallotton's "Les Fauteuils, Varengeville" (1904). This enchanting painting captures a tranquil garden scene bathed in the verdant hues of nature. Under the vast canopy of leafy trees, red chairs dot the landscape, inviting viewers into a peaceful repose. A single figure, clad in red to match the armchairs, sits contemplatively, enhancing the painting’s aura of quiet introspection.Vallotton’s mastery of color and form transforms the everyday garden into a haven of calm and beauty, where patches of sunlight filter through the foliage casting dappled shadows on the grass. The distant view of soft, structured greenery and the gentle curve of the garden path lead our eyes beyond, towards a cozy, obscured house. This work is a testament to Vallotton’s ability to convey atmosphere through his distinct, subdued palette and the precise, simple forms of post-impressionism.

Félix Édouard Vallotton (December 28, 1865 – December 29, 1925) was a Swiss and French painter and printmaker associated with the group of artists known as Les Nabis. He was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut. He painted portraits, landscapes, nudes, still lifes, and other subjects in an unemotional, realistic style.
