More about this artwork

We are delighted to present one of the exquisite works by Sir Anthony van Dyck, the paramount figure of the English Baroque style, titled "Catherine Howard, Lady d’Aubigny." This stunning portrait offers insight into van Dyck's mastery in capturing both grace and aristocracy. The subject of this portrait, Lady Catherine Howard, is depicted with an almost ethereal allure. Dressed in luxurious satin, the folds and sheen of her gown are rendered with a meticulous attention to texture and light, a testament to van Dyck's skill in portraying sophisticated garments. The deep, rich red of her dress contrasts beautifully with the delicate, pearly tones of her skin and the soft gray of her cascading shawl.Lady Catherine's demeanor and expression convey a serene confidence, her gaze directly engaging the viewer. Her curly, auburn hair is adorned with what appears to be holly berries, adding a touch of natural vitality that complements the floral motif. In her hand, she gracefully holds a bouquet of roses, symbolizing perhaps youth and beauty, elements that are timelessly associated with the subject’s aristocratic status. With a background that subtly fades into darkness, van Dyck skillfully draws all attention to the central figure, highlighting her status and the vibrant textures of her attire. The painting not only showcases the artistic capabilities of van Dyck but also immortalizes the elegance of an era and the individual charm of Lady Catherine Howard.

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy.

The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work.
