More about this artwork

"Meditation" (1937) by Alexej von Jawlensky is a captivating example of the artist's profound engagement with spiritual and abstract themes through the medium of painting. In this work, Jawlensky abandons the realistic depiction of the visible world in favor of a composition that prioritizes internal, abstract expressions. This painting presents a bold, structured form in the center that almost resembles a window or a cross, an emblem that might suggest a gateway to deeper contemplation or a symbol of faith. The central form is surrounded by vibrant and dynamically applied strokes of color, including deep greens, vivid pinks, and luminous yellows. These colors could be interpreted as representing the diverse aspects of the human soul or varying emotions one might explore during meditation.Jawlensky’s use of thick, textural brushstrokes enhances the intensity and depth of the color fields, making the artwork almost pulsate with energy. This effect invites the viewer to pause and reflect, engaging with the painting in a meditative state, contemplating the interplay of color and form."Meditation" encapsulates Jawlensky's transition towards mysticism and the metaphysical in his later years, providing a visual reflection on spirituality and the internal emotional landscape of humanity.
