More about this artwork

This captivating illustration, "L’Horlogerie" by Félix Vallotton, takes us into the intricate world of watchmaking through the lens of the early 20th century. Executed in a clear and refined graphic style, the artwork invites us to peer over the shoulder of a watchmaker engrossed in the precision of his craft. The scene is set in a modest workspace, illuminated by natural light streaming through a window. The central character, a bespectacled watchmaker, is depicted with meticulous attention as he carefully examines a timepiece. His tools are neatly laid out on the worktable, surrounded by an array of clocks in various stages of repair, symbolizing perhaps, the passage of time and the meticulous nature of his work.Adding a touch of warmth and life to the composition, a cat, the watchmaker’s silent companion, looks up attentively, adding a sense of calmness and companionship to the focused atmosphere of the workspace.Framed by an ornate, swirling border that suggests the continuity and intricacy of time itself, Vallotton's work is not only a testament to the art of watchmaking but also a reflection on the silent, ongoing march of time, captured here in a moment of stillness and detail.

Félix Édouard Vallotton (December 28, 1865 – December 29, 1925) was a Swiss and French painter and printmaker associated with the group of artists known as Les Nabis. He was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut. He painted portraits, landscapes, nudes, still lifes, and other subjects in an unemotional, realistic style.
