More about this artwork

Paul Klee's painting "Mythos Einer Insel" (Myth of an Island) is an arresting work that captures the spirit of abstraction and symbolism prevalent in Klee's art. In this watercolor, the viewer is presented with a whimsical interpretation of an island, rendered in bold yet translucent outlines that interplay with soft washes of color. This piece uniquely showcases Klee's skill in using color and line to evoke rather than to define. The outlines in a variety of hues—soft orange, green, and grey—suggest rocky contours and landscape features, while the gentle blue of the surrounding water contrasts and complements the warmer tones of the island.A notable aspect of the painting is the incorporation of face-like elements within the landscape, hinting at the possible mythological narrative or sentient quality of this imagined island. This anthropomorphic feature invites viewers to explore a narrative or mythic presence, possibly reflecting the island's own ‘spirit’ or the stories encapsulated within its surreal borders.Overall, Paul Klee’s "Mythos Einer Insel" is a testament to his innovative approach to art, where the line between the real and the surreal blurs, giving rise to an engaging visual language that leaves much to the imagination.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance.
