More about this artwork

Explore a masterpiece from 1892 by Félix Vallotton, entitled "The Jungfrau." Created through the striking technique of woodcut printmaking, this artwork captures the majestic beauty of the Jungfrau Mountain, a notable peak in the Swiss Alps.In this composition, Vallotton skilfully balances the contrasts of light and dark, accentuating the rugged textures of the mountain against a softly layered sky. The scene is depicted under the quiet luminescence of a crescent moon, illuminating the scattered clouds and serene landscape. The foreground features dark, dense foliage, serving as a stark frame that directs the viewer’s eye towards the luminous, snow-capped peaks."The Jungfrau" not only showcases Vallotton's precision in woodcut art but also evokes a sense of tranquility and awe amidst nature's grandeur.

Félix Édouard Vallotton (December 28, 1865 – December 29, 1925) was a Swiss and French painter and printmaker associated with the group of artists known as Les Nabis. He was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut. He painted portraits, landscapes, nudes, still lifes, and other subjects in an unemotional, realistic style.
