More about this artwork

Welcome to an exploration of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg’s remarkable 1816 painting, "Una Ciociara, Portrait of a Roman Country Girl." This exquisite portrait captures the essence of a young woman dressed in traditional attire from the Ciociaria region in Italy, known for its cultural richness and historic significance. The subject is depicted with an air of quiet dignity and introspection. Her eyes gaze softly to the side, suggesting a moment of contemplation. The artist’s mastery in rendering subtle facial expressions invites viewers to ponder the thoughts and emotions of the woman portrayed.Eckersberg’s attention to detail is evident in the intricate attire of the Ciociara woman. She wears a striking headscarf, elegantly framing her face, and her dress is adorned with detailed embroidery and patterns that hint at the local craftsmanship. The vibrant red coral necklace and matching earrings, typical of the region's traditional costume, add a bold contrast to the soft hues of her outfit, emphasizing her cultural identity. This painting is not only a masterful representation of individual poise and beauty but also serves as a cultural documentation of the attire and demeanor typical of the Roman countryside in the early 19th century.
