More about this artwork

George Hendrik Breitner's painting "Cavalry" captures a dynamic scene of a group of cavalrymen on their horses in motion. Painted in Breitner’s characteristic style that merges realism with impressionist influences, this artwork showcases the fluid movement and strong figures of both the horses and riders. In the painting, the cavalrymen are dressed in dark, formal military attire, which contrasts strikingly against the dust stirred up by the horses' hooves and the muted tones of the open landscape behind them. The detailed expressions of the horses, along with the focused demeanor of the riders, lend an air of solemnity and purpose to the scene.Breitner's skillful use of light and shadow, along with his loose brushstrokes, enhances the feeling of movement and the fleeting moment captured in the scene. The wide panoramic format of the painting invites the viewer to feel as though they are part of the procession, moving forward with the cavalry."Cavalry" is a testament to Breitner’s ability to convey drama and action, while also encapsulating a moment in time that speaks to the broader themes of duty and discipline in military life. This poignant work not only showcases Breitner's mastery of painting but also offers a glimpse into the historical context of the cavalry’s role in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

George Hendrik Breitner (12 September 1857 – 5 June 1923) was a Dutch painter and photographer. An important figure in Amsterdam Impressionism, he is noted especially for his paintings of street scenes and harbours in a realistic style. He painted en plein air, and became interested in photography as a means of documenting street life and atmospheric effects – rainy weather in particular – as reference materials for his paintings.
