More about this artwork

"Vase with Pink Flowers" by George Hendrik Breitner is a captivating still life painting that showcases the artist’s unique impressionistic style. Dated between 1880 and 1923, this artwork embodies a delicate yet poignant exploration of floral beauty, emphasizing a lively contrast and the temporary nature of life. The centerpiece of the painting is a white vase elaborately adorned with blue floral motifs, cradling a vibrant array of pink flowers. The blossoms, painted with bold, sweeping brush strokes in shades of pink and green, seem almost in motion, brimming with life. The background is rendered in a muted palette of earthy tones, creating a stark contrast that further accentuates the vividness of the flowers.Breitner’s composition is both simple and complex, with the detailed patterns on the vase adding a touch of elegance and intricacy to the otherwise straightforward subject matter. This painting not only highlights Breitner’s skill in capturing everyday beauty but also reflects the period's shifting artistic preferences towards more expressive and emotional art forms.

George Hendrik Breitner (12 September 1857 – 5 June 1923) was a Dutch painter and photographer. An important figure in Amsterdam Impressionism, he is noted especially for his paintings of street scenes and harbours in a realistic style. He painted en plein air, and became interested in photography as a means of documenting street life and atmospheric effects – rainy weather in particular – as reference materials for his paintings.
